My favorite children's letters to Holly

I'm 16 and I re-read the Legend of Holly Claus every christmas. Not just because it is an amazing fairy tale, but because it reminds me about the important things in life: dreams faith and love. It restores my faith in magic and freewill, and something greater than ourselves and love. This book makes me not so afraid to grow up.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for this classic book that is a part of my life forever!

Merry Christmas !

"Merry Christmas!" Holly called. She leaned over the edge of the sleigh and two tears dropped into the air. The two drops quivered slightly and turned to snow. They hung in the air for a moment and then they spiraled down to the waiting earth.

The power of letters

Christopher's letter to santa

We've all heard of the story of Virgina O'Hanlon, and her letter to the newspaper The Sun, " is there a Santa Claus?" . The editiorial which contained the response from the newspaper, entitled "Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus", has become so popular that it is now a part of the american christmas folklore, and the famous sentence even part of american idiomatic expressions, as a way to ensure someone that something is true.

In The Legend of Holly Claus, the christmas classic novel, Christopher writes a letter, too. 

Now in his letter, Christopher doesn't ask IF Santa is real, but, since he is, what HE wants for christmas. I think Christopher's letter should become part of the folklore as well, as a sort of sequel to Virginia's. Let the two children represent the children of the world and the tradition of Christmas !

Nous avons tous entendu parler de l'histoire de Virignia O'Hanlon, et de sa lettre au journal The Sun, "Y a-t-il un Père Noël ?". Le mot de l'éditeur, qui contenait la réponse du journal, appelé "Oui Viriginia, il y a bien un Père Noël", est devenu si populaire qu'il fait maintenant partie du folklore de Noël américain, et la célèbre phrase est devenue une expression américaine bien connue, comme un moyen d'assurer l'authenticité de quelque chose à quelqu'un. 

Dans La Légende de Holly Claus, le roman classique de Noël, le petit Christopher écrit lui aussi une lettre.

Mais dans la sienne, Christopher ne demande pas SI le Père Noël existe, mais ce que LUI veux pour Noël!

Je pense que cette lettre devrait entrer dans le folklore aussi, comme une sorte de suite à celle de Virginia. Que Christopher et Virginia puissent représenter les enfants du monde entier et la tradition de Noël !

This locket is a symbol of the secret we all guard in ourselves. We are born with what we need to go through our lives, no matter how hard or overwhelming things seems to be sometimes. You might lose yourself in times of discouragement and solitude, but you can't forget that life put whatever you need to be inspired, strong, courageous, and amibitious. Find that secret deep inside you and cherish it like Holly will cherish her locket.

Ce médaillon est un symbole du secret que nous portons tous en nous. Nous sommes nés avec ce dont nous avons besoin pour vivre notre vie, qu'importe que la vie nous semble accablante et dure parfois. On peut être submergé, découragé, seul - l'important c'est qu'il ne faut pas oublier que la vie nous a offert tout ce qu'il faut pour être fort, inspiré, courageux, ambitieux. Il faut trouver ce secret en soi, et le chérir comme Holly chérira son médaillon.

This week at school, I was asked to write about relationships that change people's lives in my language class. I didn't have to seek for ideas very long... it corresponded really well with my experience with Brittney for Holly Claus ! talking about something I am involving myself into right now let me be sincere and express myself with confidence (a Julie Andrews song again...). 
As a matter of fact, I had a very nice week. I was rewarded for me efforts, my doubts were erased, my problems solved. I talked about my work with Brittney Ryan to my friends and family, who gave me positive and encouraging responses. It comforted me to see they enjoyed hearing about my experience and my dream to inspire people around me. 
I hope this message will reach you and that you can find confidence and share your feelings with your folks !

Je n'ai pas eu besoin de chercher très longtemps... ça correspondait parfaitement avec mon expérience aux côtés de Brittney pour Holly Claus ! parler de quelque chose que je suis en train de vivre et dans quoi je m'implique m'a permis d'être sincère et de m'exprimer avec confiance.

Princess Holly Claus, the first child ever born in the magical Kingdom of Forever

" Holly was laughing at something the rest of them couldn't see. Only Emmalylis, the youngest and smallest of the Boucane sisters, knew what was happening. The will-o'-the-wisps had come. These are the tiniest of fairies, and because mortals simply dismiss them as dust motes and leave them alone, they are the only fairies that willingly show themselves to humans. Babies know what they are, though, and the will-o'-the-wisps love them for it. For a baby, these little golden fairies will wiggle and dance and somersault through the air for hours. I love how these playful fairies are seen as "dust motes" by humans. They are so full of joy and kindness, though humans just don't pay attention... It shows how the profuse beauty of the world is often ignored and trivialized. Yes the world can be a corrupted, polluted, grey place, but if you try real hard and enable your eyes and your spirit to welcome the most brief shaft of sunrise on the golden leaves of the trees in autumn, the scarcely perceptible whistle of the wintery snow, the most succint delicious smell of flowers blooming in spring, the least cool breeze against your skin in the hot air of summer... You'll just be lavished with beauty.

I find this passage beautiful and very meaningful. It is a symbol of growing up and stepping into your destiny. Holly is accepting the majesty of a woman, by realizing she is becoming the woman she has dreamed of becoming, and enabling herself to take the responsibilities that are part of her future. It implies making sacrifices, for her it's leaving her homeland, but it might also be renouncing to a part of your life. Some say it's breaking away from being a child, but I think even if you have to renounce to childhood, it doesn't mean you have to abandon the child in you. Keep and cherish this child in your heart forever, make peace with yourself, and that's how you can make a step forward without regrets.

Je trouve ce passage beau et empli de signification. C'est un symbole du passage de l'enfance à la destinée. Holly accepte la majesté d'une femme, elle réalise qu'elle est en train de devenir  la femme qu'elle a toujours rêvé d'être, et s'accorde de prendre les responsabilités qui font partie de son futur. Cela implique de faire des sacrifices, pour elle quitter un monde pour un autre, comme renoncer à une période de notre vie. Certains disent que c'est s'affranchir de l'enfance, mais je pense que même si c'est le cas, on est pas forcé d'abandonner l'enfant en soi. Gardez et chérissez cet enfant pour toujours, faites la paix avec vous-mêmes et vous n'aurez aucun regret à avancer dans la vie.

Being the Ambassador to France for Holly Claus is for me a true opportunity to share with others what I have learned, and am still learning. The feeling of being inspired by Brittney Ryan and the story of Holly Claus is so wonderful that doing so for others is the most gratifying thing.  As the Holly Claus Ambassador I know that I will be inspiring other people with Holly Claus to follow their dreams and be as Holly says- Be the Guardian of your own destiny.

1st Chat with Brittney Ryan !

Brittney and I just had our first chat on skype ! She shared her experience with me, and here are some inspiring words from her:




How did you start writing ?
As I was a young girl, my grandmother would bring me stories and legends that I would love to act out, like Little Women by Louisa May Alcott which is one of my favourites. I wanted to tell stories, share them with the world. So I said "I want to be a writer!" and my grandmother said "No... you want to be an author. An author creates, originates, writes about something nobody has ever seen." So I said I wanted to write fairytales. She said "No, you want to write legends. Legends become part of the culture, are timeless and reach out to the world forever..."
So I read "The Power of myth" by J. Campbell, and learned about the powerful messages Legends could deliver. I loved children's legends, and after having acted them out... I started writing my own ! I started keeping journals about a princess in a fantasy land. 

How did Holly Claus come to life?

When I was 17, I used to play in musicals. One day I wrote my own, and presented it to an audience. I invited a little girl on stage  with me and asked her what her dream was. She said nothing, kept staring at me... when the curtains closed, she said: " Are you Santa's daughter ? I'm gonna keep your secret forever. "

There it was. The princess I had written about all my life was the daughter of Santa Claus, Holly, who lived in the Kingdom of Forever!

I never saw the little girl again... which, my mother said, was an angel sent to give me a message!

How did you decide to publish the Legend of Holly Claus ?What would you tell yourself when you came across difficulties ?

One day I met the executive producer of a major film company, and as I was telling him about the stories I was writing, he said I should make them into a novel. Which I did, and found it was such a powerful way to reach children across the world...

Great writing is about rewriting. I went through 12 different versions of my first manuscript!

It is not an easy road, I have gone through so many years of rejection... yet I never gave up. Sometimes family and friends don't understand and don't want you to be disappointed. But I found courage, and my editor Patti who's been supporting me for 13 years now. I also met Julie Andrews and her daughter Emma, who fell in love with Holly Claus, and the magic happened! HarperCollins published The Legend of Holly Claus, it became a New York Times best seller, and was nominated for the best book of the year. OpenRoadMedia published my ebook this week, and my next novel is coming out next year*, as well as audio and picture books. 

No matter the challenge, no matter the obstacle, you have to stick to your dream, and you will get better. You just get better and better !

Quand as-tu commencé à écrire ?

Quand j'étais petite fille, ma grand-mère me faisait lire des contes et des légendes que j'adorais transformer en pièces de théâtre, comme Les Quatre filles du docteur March de Louisa May Alcott, une de mes histoires préférées. Je voulais partager ces histoires avec le monde. Alors j'ai dit « je veux être écrivain ! » et ma grand-mère m'a répondu : « Non... tu veux être auteur ! Un auteur, crée, invente, écrit sur des choses que personne n'a jamais vues ! » Alors j'ai dit que je voulais écrire des contes, et là ma grand-mère m'a dit « Non, tu veux écrire des Légendes... Les légendes font partie de la culture d'un pays, elles sont touchent le monde à travers le temps et l'espace ! »

Alors j'ai lu «Le pouvoir du mythe" de J. Campbell, et j'ai découvert à quel point les légendes offraient des messages puissants et intemporels. J'aimais beaucoup les contes pour enfants, alors après les avoir joués... j'ai écrit mes propres contes ! Je tenais le journal d'une princesse qui vivait dans un pays imaginaire...

Comment est-ce que Holly est née?

Quand j'avais 17 ans, je jouais dans des comédies musicales. Un jour, j'ai écrit ma propre pièce et l'ai présentée à un public. J'ai invité une petite fille sur scène avec moi et lui ai demandé son rêve. Elle ne disait rien, me regardait avec de grands yeux... lorsque les rideaux sont descendus elle a dit: «Tu es la fille du père Noël ? Je vais garder ton secret pour toujours !»

Elle était là. La princesse de mes histoires, c'était la fille du Père Noël, Holly, qui vivait dans le Royaume de l'Éternité!

Je n'ai jamais revu la petite fille... qui, disait ma mère, était un ange chargé d'un message pour moi !

Comment as-tu décidé de publier l'histoire de Holly? Comment arrives-tu à contourner les difficultés?

Un jour j'ai rencontré un grand producteur de cinéma, alors je lui ai raconté l'histoire de Holly, et il m'a dit que je devrais la transformer en un roman. Ce que j'ai fait, et j'ai trouvé que c'était un merveilleux moyen d'atteindre les enfants partout dans le monde...

Bien écrire réside dans la réécriture. J'ai écrit 12 versions différents de mon premier manuscrit !

La route n'est pas simple, j'ai été mise à la porte beaucoup de fois... Mais je n'ai jamais abandonné. Parfois les amis et la famille ne comprennent pas, ils ne veulent pas que vous soyez déçu. Alors j'ai trouvé le courage, et mon éditrice Patti qui est avec moi depuis maintenant 13 ans. J'ai aussi rencontré Julie Andrews et sa fille, Emma, ​​qui est tombé amoureuse de Holly, et la magie a opéré ! HarperCollins a publié La Légende de Holly Claus, qui est devenu un best-seller au New York Times, et a été nominé pour le meilleur livre de l'année.OpenRoadMedia a publié mon ebook cette semaine, et mon prochain livre sort l'année prochaine*.

Qu'importe les obstacles, il faut toujours croire en son rêve et il se réalise. On s'améliore et on grandit de jour en jour !

Stepping into the future is something you do everyday. Stepping into your future though, is more meaningful : it's something that touches you, personnally, and that will be important in your life. This summer, I accepted to be Brittney Ryan's Holly Claus ambassador to france. Today, here I am, writing to you and sharing my feelings. It is true that stepping into your future can be amazingly scary when you look at it. But once you've taken that tiny step, in your mind, once you've decided to do it because you know you can, suddenly... you realise that you already have all it takes to go forward, and there will always be people to support and admire you, even if you don't see them !

It can be anything, taking an important exam to changing schools... which I did a year ago. It was hard, I won't deny it, I had to leave my home, my cats, my mom, and live at school with people I didn't know, and take classes I had never taken before. But soon I thought that it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be, and even started liking it. I made the most wonderful friends, discovered so much about life, people, art, language... I joyfully bloomed, as a timid cherry blossom at the rustle of spring ! So today I want to share this with you because too many people are pessimistic and discouraged when it comes to true happiness. But the secret is, it's right there with you, waiting for you to find the key and let it out so it can flutter along and stroke you with its warmth.

Faire un pas dans l'avenir est quelque chose qu'on fait tous les jours. Faire un pas dans son avenir en revanche, est plus significatif, c'est quelque chose qui vous touche personnellement, qui a une certaine importance. Cet été j'ai accepté d'être l'ambassadrice de Holly Claus pour Brittney Ryan. Et me voilà écrivant mes impressions, mes doutes. Aller vers l'avenir peut paraître très effrayant au début, c'est certain. Mais une fois qu'on franchit cette limite, quand on décide de le faire parce qu'on sait au fond de nous qu'on peut le faire, alors... On se rend compte qu'on a déjà tout ce qu'il faut pour aller de l'avant, et qu'il y aura toujours des gens pour vous soutenir, vous admirer, même s'ils sont discrets...

Ca peut être n'importe quoi, de passer un examen à changer de vie... ce qui m'est arrivé l'an dernier. Je ne vais pas nier que c'était difficile au début, j'ai du m'adapter, j'ai douté de moi. Mais très vite je me suis rendu compte que ça n'était pas si dur, que finalement ça m'avait fait du bien, j'ai pu lâcher prise et apprécier. J'ai rencontré des personnes formidables, découvert la vie, la langue, l'art... Je me suis épanouie, comme une fleur hâtive à l'arrivée du printemps ! Le secret c'est que le bonheur est là, qu'il attend d'être affranchi pour vous envahir, vous submerger de son agréable chaleur.
